Distinguished and Famous people from Kangaroo Island
🌟 George Bates
Sealer and trader George Bates left his vessel at Kangaroo Island in 1824 and became one of its long-term European inhabitants before formal South Australian colonisation. He later lived at Hog Bay, now Penneshaw, trading local products and building a cottage. His history also includes the abduction and exploitation of Aboriginal women, whose knowledge and labour supported the sealers’ survival.
🩺 Joy Seager
Joy Seager answered an urgent request for a doctor at Kingscote in 1925, when Kangaroo Island had no hospital. At first she had neither car nor telephone, travelling by horse to patients and consulting from a small metal shed. Later, from the family property at Hawks Nest, she combined regular Kingscote sessions with emergency work across the island. She established a temporary hospital before a permanent one opened in 1930. Her memoir, Kangaroo Island Doctor, eventually inspired a television drama. The remarkable story rests on a long local practice, with transport and communications often as challenging as the medicine.
⛵ Nicolas Baudin
Nicolas Baudin’s French expedition gathered natural-history specimens on Kangaroo Island during its exploration of Australian coasts in the early nineteenth century. The voyage combined chart-making with the work of scientists collecting plants and animals. François Péron became a major contributor to its published record. Baudin also encountered Matthew Flinders at Encounter Bay on the mainland, linking French and British surveying histories. The island’s association is the expedition’s documented scientific work, one part of a much longer human history that did not begin with the arrival of European ships.
